Eilat, located deep in the south, lies far away from central Israel and the way there crosses the Negev desert.
There are well developed tourist attractions and it is easy to get anywhere. You can leave your car at the hotel and go for a walk along the promenade and every other site.
Parking
Parking in Eilat is quite easy, although you will find blue and white curbstones in the main roads which means that it is allowed to park only with pay-and-display vouchers (can be acquire on street machines), there are a lot of small streets where you can find grey curbstones where you can park with no problem. Eilat is a small city, where you can explore by foot.
Road conditions
Eilat has a lot of roundabouts replacing traffic signals. When approaching a roundabout, always give way to the traffic that is already in the roundabout.
The main road to Eilat, called "The Arava" road, is a two-lane road for both directions.
Since it is a long journey, drivers often fall asleep, drive faster than the speed limit or overtake in dangerous ways.
It can be frustrating driving behind a truck, so be extremely careful when trying to overtake it.

General tips |
Seatbelts are compulsory front and rear. Children under 14 years old are not allowed to sit in the front.
It is illegal to speak with a mobile phone without a "hands free" device.
For any car rental in Eilat, you must carry your driving license at all times, as well as your Avis insurance and rental details. Check with your agent about the need of an international driving license.
When picking up/returning a car from/to Ben-Gurion airport, there is a handling fee of $27. Tourists and non-Israeli citizens don’t pay VAT which is 16%.
There is a toll road named "highway 6" that stretches out from the north (Ein-Tut junction between Zichron-Yaakov and Yokneam) to the south (Maachaz junction near Beer-Sheva).
Payment is made automatically via a car license scanner and the bill is sent to the driver by mail or car rental company.
